Finnish Lapland

Winter in Finnish Lapland is a landscape of heavy snow and rime-covered forests. With temperatures dropping to –35°F, conditions are harsh, and the region’s position near the Arctic Circle means short days and a low sun that briefly paint the terrain in pale blues, soft pinks, and muted golds against an otherwise monochrome backdrop. In Riisitunturi National Park, snow- and ice-laden trees bend and curl under their own weight, forming clusters of sculptural “snow monsters.” Kuntivaara, reached by snowmobile, is a similar but denser and less-visited forest along the Finnish–Russian border, overlooking several frozen lakes. In Oulanka National Park, the scene becomes almost black and white. Dark, tannin-stained water cuts through snow and ice around the Myllykoski mill and rapids, with brash ice slowly swirling in a quiet pool below. Syöte offers a softer atmosphere, with fog drifting through the forest. Across the region, reindeer herding remains central to life, and with more reindeer than people, Lapland feels remote, open, untouched, and visually rich—a place where strong photographic compositions appear everywhere you look.
