Alaska offers some of the most dramatic wildlife and glacier photography in the world, set against wilderness that remains largely untouched. At McNeil River State Game Sanctuary, only a handful of visitors each year—granted access through a lottery—witness grizzlies gathering on the sedge flats and along Mikfik Creek before migrating upriver to McNeil Falls, where the salmon run draws dozens of bears and complex behaviors play out at close range. In Katmai National Park, Brooks Falls delivers the iconic sight of bears catching salmon mid-leap, while at Hallo Bay, bears turn to clamming along the coast before the fish arrive. Overhead, bald eagles stalk the scraps of salmon left behind, adding another layer to the spectacle. Beyond the bears, sweeping views of Kenai Fjords National Park, with Bear Glacier flowing down from the vast Harding Icefield, showcase Alaska’s immense, ice-carved landscapes. Together, these places highlight the raw power of nature in one of the last great frontiers for photographers.
